Our school has a special brotherhood as a group of 8 schools across New Zealand which was formed in 1997. The first sporting competitions commenced in 1998, involving rugby and cricket. Now the Super Eight includes 10 sports competitions, a cultural festival, and professional development programmes for staff. The schools in the Super Eight are Gisborne Boys’ High School, Hamilton Boys’ High School, Hastings Boys’ High School, Napier Boys’ High School, New Plymouth Boys’ High School, Rotorua Boys’ High School, Palmerston North Boys’ High School, and Tauranga Boys’ College. A full history can be found in the document the First 25 Years of Super 8, published in 2024.
Although the Super 8 is known for its strong sporting rivalries, especially in Rugby and Cricket, the association is founded on three core pillars:
- Sporting Excellence: Competing in more than 10 sports, including Basketball, Football, Clay Target Shooting, and Chess.
- Cultural Vitality: The annual Super 8 Cultural Festival highlights excellence in Kapa Haka, Debating, Drama, and Music.
- Professional Leadership: Our staff collaborate with colleagues across the Super 8 network to share best practices in boys' education, ensuring Napier Boys' High School remains a leader in modern teaching.
Napier Boys’ High School has a proud history of success within the Super 8. From the legendary Polson Banner rugby exchange with Palmerston North to our recent 2024 victory in the Super 8 Cricket Tournament, the "Sky Blue" jersey is synonymous with grit and sportsmanship.
