Napier Boys’ High School understands the unique abilities and talents of our students. Our boys possess exceptional skills across various domains, which calls for a distinct teaching and learning environment that fosters challenge and creativity.
Educating boys since 1872, our school combines our rich experience and knowledge with the latest research findings and ongoing professional development. This ensures that we continuously adapt to the evolving educational needs of talented young men, providing them with the best possible learning environment, alongside a strong Old Boys’ network.
As a school community, our goal is to nurture the talents of each student, enabling them to realise their full potential. We recognise and build upon their initiative, interests, and individual learning needs, encouraging them to persevere in their pursuits.
Extensive research in the field of gifted education consistently emphasises the importance of specialised teaching and learning approaches tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual. At Napier Boys’ High School, we prioritise the educational requirements specific to boys. Our teaching methods are backed by comprehensive research, ensuring that our boys are engaged and intellectually stimulated. This research affirms what many parents of boys already understand that boys thrive in an environment tailored to their learning style.

We are renowned for our high participation levels in a wide range of sporting codes. The school provides opportunities for all students to play sport at all levels of competition from teams for beginners wanting new skills, to teams competing in Super 8 and at national level.
As well as fun and improving health and well-being, sport will also teach you valuable life skills such as leadership on teamwork, commitment, discipline, setting goals and striving for personal excellence, every student is encouraged to challenge themselves, try something new and do their very best.
Annual senior fixtures with Wellington College, Wairarapa College and Scots College as well as exchanges with Palmerston North Boys’ High School (Polson Banner), Gisborne Boys’ High School and Tauranga Boys’ College round out a busy sports’ calendar. Overseas development tours are also seen as an integral part of our sports’ programme. These competitions, exchanges and tours give our athletes a sporting advantage not afforded locally with exposure to competitors, teams and selectors at a national level.
Kukri sports’ apparel are proud sponsors of our sporting programme. Each year there are at least a dozen New Zealand representatives in various sporting codes. The ongoing success of our premier sportsmen highlights the quality of our coaching and the competition available at the school. As a New Zealand Super Eight school, we showcase our talent and tradition against the leading boys’ only state schools in the central and upper North Island.
